Taken in Scarborough in the mid-1920s by North Bay Snaps

This information is for people who would like to contribute any Walking Pictures to the project. Although the book is now more or less finished as far as artwork goes, this will be an ongoing project, so do get involved.

My email address is admin at easyontheeye dot net  (replace the words and and dot with the symbols). Please contact me before sending material or scanning anything so we can keep track.

SCANNING IMAGES : for scans to to be used in a printed book, they need to be at a much higher quality than for use on the internet.
Ideally images should be scanned at 200% size (i.e. twice their actual size), and 300 dpi / ppi (dots or pixels per inch) resolution.
We like the scan to include the edge of the print if possible. If the back of the photograph has details of the photographer, caption, etc. scans of that can be useful.
When making scans it is useful to have the options on a very neutral setting to avoid too much contrast.
Scans at 72 dpi, the default size for websites, are too small and would result in the pictures appearing jagged or pixelated if we tried to use them in a book.
Scans can be done as greyscale or RGB – RGB will give a larger file size. Once the scan has been done, it can be saved as a jpeg file, which squeezes the file size down making it faster to send. It is often faster to send scans one at a time attached to separate emails.

POSTING : If all the talk of scanning and file sizes is too much, you can post the images to us instead. Please protect them and send by recorded delivery. I will scan the images and return in a couple of days, again by recorded delivery. We cannot be responsible for material while it is in the postal system, but of the many hundreds of images sent to us none have been mislaid. If you wish, when returning the photographs, we can send you a computer disc back with high quality scans on for your own use.

USEAGE : It is understood that by loaning any images, you agree to us being able to use them in the forthcoming book if suitable, along with the associated internet site. Credit will be given in the book. If we caption any image, we will send you sight of this for approval.
Each picture should be accompanied by as much historical detail as possible – names of the people, location, year, and so forth. This will appear alongside the image in the book.

Go Home On A Postcard is due to be published soon and more details are on the site. You can join a mailing list there to be kept up to date via a newsletter.

The postal address is: Simon Robinson. Easy On The Eye Books. 74 Nethergate. Sheffield S6 6DJ. South Yorkshire.

RESTORATION : I am able to do photo restoration work, but would need to see the image first to quote a price.

Are you still interested in receiving Walking Pictures? I have gone through my family snaps and come up with a dozen or so of different family members in the ’30s at a variety of locations, including one from Ostend.

I have a Walking Picture” photo of a deceased relative. To me it looks as though it could have been taken in the 20’s or 30’s. It doesn’t look like a seaside picture. I was wondering if you could possibly date the picture and suggest a location. Glynis Jones

I have just come across a Sunbeam/Margate photo of my late mother and another female walking on the prom presumably in Margate. It has a reference # on it and was taken sometime between the late 30’s and the early 50’s, although I would tend on the side of late 30’s early/late 40’s. If you would like a copy let me know, I’ll try and scan. If I can’t scan I can mail it to you.

Hi Steve, a scan would be great. There are some guidelines on the blog about sizes etc. to scan. To help date it, scanning the back would also be useful (unless plain).

Hi Simon, I have a walking shot of my mother Margaret Anne Parkin which I think was taken in Bridlington, August 1963. Would like to know it’s exact location.

Hi Neil, feel free to send me a scan and I’ll see if I can help. I’m now pretty good on Bridlington locations having looked at so many walkies from there!

  6. I have a walking photo of my parents with “Paignton, May 1943” handwritten on the back, but no photographer details. My father is in Army uniform. we visited Paignton last year and identified the location, which I confirmed with the Paignton Historical Society, who said that, although the beaches were blocked off with anti-tank defences, etc., the promenades were still open. I have a scan at 600 dpi if you’re interested.

  7. I have a copy (of a copy) scanned, of a posed photo of my Grandfather in uniform, circa 1916/17. It has the photographer ID of Brigham and Scarborough & Bridlington. I assume it has connections and would you like a copy. I can email it.

        Hi Simon

As you say, the site is all about walking pictures: there must be a million out there of posed photos of WW1 servicemen in uniform.

Meanwhile, did you safely receive the two walkies I sent?

        Cheers

        Brian

I have a walking pic taken Feb 1936 in London by Sunny Snaps. I know it is my great grandmother and it was sent to my grandfather at the same time. I would be happy to send it to you by e-mail with the caption on the back; if you are able to enhance the photo you may be able to pin point where it was taken, thanks mike long

  9. Wendy Gaynor Hollins (nee Donaldson)

Hello, my name is Gaynor Donaldson, I live in Perth Australia, but am from Yorkshire. I have a photo, a portrait of a young man who I would think is a relative, no name of course. Its a postcard, with this number on it 37662A-6 and has The Children’s Studio on the back with the name W Foster Brigham. is it possible to track down when this was taken and any other information.

    November 15, 2014 at 7:23 am

    • simon robinson

Foster Brigham seems to have had a separate studio room where he would take postcard size portraits of children. His more expensive portraits were usually signed in pencil, but these postcards were not. They just had The Children’s Studio address on the back. I have one of an unnamed young child taken here, holding a large felt kangaroo. It is from the early 1920s.

Hi Simon I have found some walking pictures in my mums old photo album, and have discovered what they were, how fascinating! I’m guessing they are from around the 1930s or 1940s. Some are in strips of 2 and some appear to be single? I know who the family members are in them and I believe they were taken at Yarmouth, but I do know the family did go to Skegness too. One is inscribed that they were walking down Marina Parade Yarmouth One photo does have the Cine Snaps 63 Rodney Rd Yarmouth on the reverse, I’d be interested to know if all the photos were taken in Yarmouth?

    October 6, 2016 at 7:33 am

    • simon robinson

Hello Lilian, I would be happy to try and add more detail if we can see the images. Paul Godfrey who has helped in the past on this site is a bit of an expert on Great Yarmouth, and I can probably ID Skegness having been there twice this year for a look around.

  13. Simon Bailey

    Hello, Simon,

I am a PCCGB member. I read your article on walking photographers in “Photographica World”. Coincidentally, an Ebay seller has listed a modified early cine camera, with a makeshift TLR style viewfinder. It is accompanied by many seaside images and a printing block bearing the name “Lacey’s Happy Snaps”. The seller is called megbud123 and the item number is 114333021074. Brenda, the seller, is researching the items. i informed her of your interest and the need to keep the material together. It looks like junk, but is a time capsule of the history of the walking photographer. Good luck and all the best, Simon Bailey.

Regarding the photograph by Sandhurst of Weston-super-Mare, their address – 10a South Terrace – was the same as that occupied by Jackson’s Faces in the 1930s. This may have been a coincidence, but Sandhurst was possibly a successor firm. The director of Jackson’s Faces, Frederick H Green, continued to live in Weston-super-Mare until his death in 1958, so he may have had an interest in Sandhurst.

Bournemouth Revels .The mention of Willie Cave I can tell you he was the landlord of The Queens Park Hotel, 482 Holdenhurst Road Bournemouth and his son was still occupying the premises until the middle 60s .

  18. Regarding the Guernsey photos blog, I can say that the lady who used to take many many photos in her bikini by the Town Church in St Peter Port is still alive. I think she is in her eighties now!
If you need me to try and make contact, I will do my best.

Regarding Speedisnaps. I am transcribing old records relating to my dad. I see that on his Girobank statement for 29 July 1974 there is a payment to SPEEDISN for £1.30 and handwritten by my father is the word Photos. At that time we lived in the Oldham area and I know that he only took 35 slide pictures. This suggests to me that Speedisnaps were film processors.

    January 19, 2023 at 10:24 pm

    • simon robinson

Thanks Frank. It is entirely possible the Brighton firm went on to grow into a bigger print & developing company in later years offering mail order services. I know a few other walking picture firms did (at least one is still going). On the other hand it is quite a good name, so not hard to imagine another firm coming up with it! There is a Speedy Snaps still open in Scotland for example. I am impressed a] with the idea of your Dad keeping all his old Girobank statements and b] you documenting them. An amazing resource really. Sadly we have weeded most of ours out as we go along to make sure we don’t run out of space in the filing cabinet but I did keep a few early ones just to remind us of the cost of living…

  21. Hi Simon, I just came from a trip to Margate to try and locate where a photograph of my Great Uncle and his family was taken, but failed. The picture was taken around 1934 and has the code E2302 on it. It is a cracking picture with my Great Uncle with a pipe and plus fours with his son, wife and brother and sister in law. I’d be happy for you to use it, but mainly I’d just love to know where in Margate it was taken. My Great Great Uncle lived in Cliffe Road Margate and they were obviously visiting him, but he isn’t in the picture.

Hello Rob. The “E” prefix is still not identified location wise. It might not even be Margate. If you can scan the card i can check it over and see if it gives us any clues. Simon

  23. Mrs Mandy G Hardman

Good Morning SImon. I am in posession of an old photo, stamp dated 8 June 1936 and Jerome stamped below that. The photo is an indoor sitting of an elderly lady that I can only identify if I know where the photo was taken. Is this something you could help me with please?
I am in Guernsey but don’t think we had a Jerome studio on Island, although I could be wrong.
    Many thanks
    Mandy
