Thomas Audas

Thomas Audas WW1

Thomas Audas, 1914

There are portraits of all four Audas brothers in World War One uniform. They lived in Hull, and this is Thomas, the eldest, who had emigrated to New Zealand around 1910. He came back to Europe to fight. I do not know exactly what uniform this is, but clearly it is a horse riding outfit. Thomas was injured in the foot and went back to New Zealand. The portrait was taken by Bell and Sons, based in Auckland, and is excellent technically, but I cannot find out anything about them. Why is it so rough round the edges? My Grand-mother did this to a lot of family photographs in the 1960s, cutting round them with kitchen scissors!
